Day 19 – CLINTON, IA

Just a quicker note today from Clinton, Iowa.
My apologies to anyone who tried logging into the Livestream yesterday. I’m feeling pretty dumb with technology. I tried scheduling an event, but my phone could only connect to a new event. I’ll work on troubleshooting that. Once we finally got it going, my connection was terrible. I’ve had pretty good connection during my time on the river, but maybe my upload speed isn’t so good. Again, I’ll try doing some more tests and we’ll try again in a couple days.

Yesterday was a shorter day on the river, just 18 miles. We passed a number of islands FULL of pelicans. Like thousands of them. I’ve never seen anything like it… I tried getting photos, but my camera doesn’t really do justice. Some other crew members took some that I’ll try to share.

Our show was in the riverfront town of Clinton. As we pulled in, some guy on the shore yelled warnings to us – ‘don’t swim here, it’s dangerous, don’t leave anything anywhere, the meth heads will steal it, this town has gone to hell.’ We’d already been told that this area is one of the most conservative parts of Iowa. It was also a very hot day with temperatures in the high 90’s. But we got a lovely crowd – not our biggest by some measure, but I feel like they resonated with our show in a way that hasn’t happened in a few days. In Savanna a lot of people left mid-show, but despite the heat, Clinton all stayed to the end and were very talkative and friendly. The town also extended a red carpet – giving us free moorage at the marina and rv spots in the campground. And the riverfront Candlelight Restaurant fed our entire crew for free. Thank you, Clinton!

Clinton also embraces its riverfront in a nice way – there’s a public waterpark, and an old showboat perched above the river. The levee wall makes direct river access a bit hard, but the spot we picked ended up accommodating the crowd really nicely.

Today we’re off to Le Claire Iowa – one side of an epic annual tug of war match that I’ll talk about more tomorrow!

Wheeeeeeeee!
